Travel allocations can be used for domestic travel only and can't be used to fund field trips. (These are conditions of the grant funding).
For Post Doctoral Staff:
Travel allocations can be used for either domestic or international travel.

About ACEAS Affiliation
ACEAS encourages close collaborative relationships with researchers who are not formally part of the Centre’s activities. Affiliated Investigators/PhD Students (AIs) are individuals who wish to contribute to, and benefit from, the Centre’s activities. AIs differ from Chief Investigators or Partner Investigators in that they are not responsible for the Centre’s outcomes nor entitled to funding. Ongoing AI status depends on contribution to ACEAS programs and goals and upholding ACEAS values.
Applications consist of:
- Affiliated Investigator/Student Form (links below)
- A brief and up-to-date CV
- Research statement describing the AI contribution to ACEAS Programs.
Applications from individuals wishing to become Associate Investigators (AIs) in ACEAS must be submitted through a Participating Organisation and supported by a Program Leader as being relevant to ACEAS programs and goals.
Applications for AI status should be sent to the Director for consideration. The forms required are below. Advice of successful appointment will be provided to the AI and their details recorded in the ACEAS reporting system.
It is important that Associate Investigators both contribute to, and benefit from, engagement with the Centre. As such:
- Each AI will become linked to at least one program and be part of relevant contact lists. (An AI may have interest in other areas of the Centre’s work, including end-user engagement or computational sciences. AIs can be affiliated with more than one research program if the commitment is substantiated and approved.) The research programs are:
- Theme 1 Basal Controls on Denman Ice Dynamics
- Theme 2 Meltwater, Nutrients, and Ecosystem Response
- Theme 3 Denman Climate Variability and Change
- Theme 4 Denman in Context: across systems and timescales
- The Centre’s funds must be directed to the activities of the Centre, and research staff, students and CIs are the priority. The primary means by which AIs can be involved with ACEAS is through close collaboration in research and research supervision, or stakeholder engagement and impact. The Centre cannot fund an AI’s actual research. If there is any uncertainty as to the relevance of an activity to the Centre, please discuss this with Program Leader or the Director. The Centre may offer support to an AI in one or more of the following ways:
- Allocate NCI computing or data resources from within an existing NCI allocation;
- Invite AIs to Centre workshops, winter schools etc;
- Provide in-kind support to affiliated students and postdocs working with the AI on Centre activities;
- Students formally supervised by CIs or AIs, who are enrolled in one of the seven Australian University participants, can become affiliated to the Centre provided they are working on a project that contributes to the Centre’s research goals, and the University the student is enrolled in supports the affiliation request. The nomination process is the same as for AIs.
- AIs and affiliated students will be invited to Centre workshops and other activities. Due to budget constraints the Centre will not be able to fund this involvement.
All requests for publication funding must be approved by Node Leaders prior to submitting for publication.
We strongly encourage researchers to publish in journals covered by existing CAUL open access agreements wherever possible, as these arrangements can avoid publication charges and help us make the most effective use of Centre funding.
Where a publication is proposed for a journal outside a CAUL agreement and publication costs will be incurred, you must complete the publication funding request form.
This process will help manage our publication budget transparently, track co-contributions, and ensure that ACEAS funds are being distributed strategically and equitably across the Centre.

DCCEEW funding received for ACEAS 2026-2028 is subject to the following:
All expenditure must relate directly to the project (the Activity) as defined in the grant agreement with DCCEEW.
In addition, the following are ineligible:
- new field activities
- overseas costs
- capital expenditure for the purchase of assets such as office furniture and equipment, motor vehicles, printers or photocopiers and the construction, renovation or extension of facilities such as buildings and laboratories
- non-project-related staff training and development costs
- costs related to obtaining resources used on the project, including interest on loans, job advertising and recruiting, and contract negotiations
- routine operational expenses, including communications, accommodation, office computing facilities, printing and stationery, postage, legal and accounting fees and bank charges
- costs related to preparing the grant application, preparing any project reports (except costs of the independent audit report) and preparing any project variation requests
- costs involved in the purchase or upgrade/hire of software (including user licenses) and ICT hardware
- cost recovery for salaries of permanently employed academic staff working on the project
Further, there is a cap on the amount of funding which can be allocated to domestic travel. The full amount has been allocated across partners in the ACEAS budget, so please don't reallocate node budgets as approved in order to increase domestic travel.

All ACEAS researchers are required to complete at least one Data Management Plan and submit it by email to the ACEAS Data Manager Harko Werkman: Harko.Werkman@utas.edu.au. Please contact Harko if you have any queries about completing your plan, submitting metadata, using data repositories etc.
Background and guidance for publishing data and metadata
For CIs and ACEAS Management
