FREE PUBLIC EVENT: the longest night with the emperor penguins

Join us on Wednesday 19 June at 6:30pm in Spring Bay as Dr Frederique Olivier takes us on a behind-the-scenes journey to Antarctica.

Here, she braved the dark, southern winter with the BBC to capture the true character of the emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) on film.

These birds are the tallest and heaviest of today’s penguins, with the best diving ability.

Emperor penguins depend on sea ice as part of their life cycle. Last year, a study revealed that their colonies experienced a catastrophic breeding failure in areas of the the central and eastern Bellingshausen Sea that had total sea ice loss in 2022.
